Visual Journey

I have since updated this design to a bigger and more functional piece.
Here is my updated frame, in it’s location.

This is piece is made entirely out of the back of books, binded together by thin strips of wood to make it sturdy and structured.
I have re-done this piece to make it bigger and more eye catching as the previous book frame was weak and little in comparison to this updated version.
When I had my meeting with Dan, he emphasised that I needed to explore more materials and be more creative with my work. I took on board his advice and re-created this piece to reflect his comments.
I have also recreated my book pages collage to reflect Dans comments on materials and size.

I re-created this piece entirely and changed the materials I had used. The book pages are bound together by strips of wood to keep the support strong and sturdy.
This means my piece will sit on it’s own within the window and the light will shine through the word as I had intended.
Though unfortunately, the cleaner for the library was uninformed of my piece tried to removed it by pulling on the letters and it has now slightly lost it’s shape and will no longer stand within the window. Though here is evidence that my piece did stand on its own.

This is the smallest piece I have created.
tumblr_nnyyexZpLm1qbfmfho3_1280

This is made out of cans to represent the industrial side of the warehouse. I wanted this piece to mainly speak for itself and have the audience question the use of cans. I wanted this piece to be minimal as the main focus is about the cans and the industrial side of the warehouse. The minimal effect of this piece is also to represent when the warehouse was abandoned for a while after its usage for the transportation of goods. This is why there is only a few cans standing, to indicate that they have been left behind.

I wanted to use the materials I had sourced for my piece. I had originally intended my wooden train track to run infront of the windows, however after discussing with the Library Staff they made me aware that this would be a potential tripping hazard and it would not be practical to set this up. I then spoke to them about having a grain trail to create a train track, instead of a wooden rail and they emphasised that this again would not be practical due to cleaning up the mess on the silent floor.
I instead used my wooden train track to create and art piece to represent ‘New Bolingstoke’.

This is a literal representation of the train track and fits as a substitute for my original idea.
I wanted the railway to be emphasised, although it did not work out how I had planned. I feel this piece shows the railway in a literal sense and brings to light the idea of the railway and it’s uses.

This piece is made entirely out of grain. The grain sticks to the back of the board, having the word ‘Stickney’ the only part that is not covered in grain. The grain is to represent the agricultural side of the library warehouse and how the railway used to carry grain and goods around the county.

My final piece is the word ‘Midville’ made out of hanging book backs.

The book backs are a direct link to the literal  library as we know it now and also to end the ‘journey’ as they are made out of the same material as the frame. This is a kind of framing for the piece. Having the piece start with book backs and end with book backs.

I have created every single one of these pieces entirely on my own.

Book Pages Collage

The second board I have created focuses on Coningsby as a station, the second station for the railway to visit.
This board is a collage made entirely out of book pages, mounted onto cardboard.
The word ‘Coninsby’ is cut out of the cardboard, this is so that when the board is mounted against the window, the light will shine through the word and be visiually appealing. This will draw direct attention to the back wall of the library, which is the main focus of my piece.
The book pages are used as a direct and visiual link to the library, as well as being a material for me to explore and be creative with.
This is my original sketch for the board:

This is how my board has progressed:

As you can see, I have achieved my goal of having the light shine through the book pages to create a visually pleasing piece of art work. I think with the dark brickwork surrounding this board and the bright light from the window, this will look really good.

Book Spines Frame

The first board I have created for my window features is a frame made of book spines to frame the window that looks onto Lincoln Cathedral. This has been one of my favourite features since I first explored the library. The cathedral is really clear through this window and looks beautiful, and I do not feel like enough people pay attention to this architextual feature. My book spines frame will hopefully encourage students to look out into Lincoln.
Lincoln is also the first station in which the old railway used to stop, this is where the railway would collect the goods from the warehouse. So this window is particularly important.

This is my original sketch for how I wanted the frame to look.
Dan and Conan talked about experimenting with materials and seeing what I could create so this frame is made entirely out of hardback book spines. The use of book spines is a direct and obvious link to the library, as well bringing your focus to the city of Lincoln, Lincoln as a station and the brickwork feature of the back wall of the library.

This is how my art piece has progressed:

Trialing a few of the 101 tasks

On Friday 24th April 2015, our group went through some of our tasks to see how the general public reacted. We got varied responses, when it came to the “Sleeping” task we had some worried looks and we even had somebody help with getting me and the trolley into the lift. I am beginning to feel very confident regarding the tasks that we have got, and I feel that once we start running each task we will become more confident doing the ‘abnormal’ tasks in front of the whole library.

Body Sculpture

Artist Ken Clarke has worked in film studios creating human body sculptures for films. Life cadting is a mould created by materials mixed together and then shaped around the persons body. These moulds can be placed any where and almost instantly they create new and unusual pieces of art. By taking the mould directly from the natural body, the mould casts are extremley lifelike with every detail and every  freckle is captured, this makes the casts unique and a performance a one and only. The casts of the body in these moulds create a record of the changes of the human body. A life cast can consist of a pregnant woman ranging to a childs hands. In our performance we have chosen to take inspiration from Ken Clarke and we have experiemented with the variations of body parts that can be cast.
